Why take part in a lung study?

COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, makes it hard to breathe and tends to get worse over time. Flare-ups can lead to hospital stays and lasting lung damage. Asthma can also stay uncontrolled even with daily inhalers. Research is finding new treatments that reduce flare-ups and help people stay active.

Participants get regular lung check-ups and breathing tests and a chance to help others breathe easier.

Frequently asked questions

Call 480-716-9118
Will I have to stop using my inhalers?

Usually not. Most participants keep their regular inhalers, and everyone keeps a rescue inhaler. The study doctor reviews your medicines and explains any changes before you start.

What is a spirometry test?

Spirometry is a simple breathing test. You breathe out as hard and fast as you can into a tube, and it measures how well your lungs are working. It is not painful, though some people feel tired or a little lightheaded afterward. The full test usually takes about 30–45 minutes.

Can I join if I still smoke?

Many COPD studies accept current smokers. The study team can also share resources if you want help quitting.

What if I have a flare-up during the study?

Contact the study team, and get emergency care if you need it. Flare-ups are carefully tracked, and the team will explain how to reach them.

Do lung studies cost anything?

No. Study medicine and breathing tests are provided at no cost, you don't need insurance, and you are compensated for your time and travel.
