Fatty Liver Disease (MASH) Clinical Trials in Gilbert, AZ
Mission Research Institute in Gilbert, Arizona runs clinical trials for adults with fatty liver disease, including MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, formerly called NASH). Our studies test new treatments that aim to reduce liver fat, calm inflammation and slow or reverse liver scarring.

What is fatty liver disease and MASH?
Fatty liver disease happens when extra fat builds up in the liver. It is now called MASLD (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease), formerly NAFLD, and it affects roughly 1 in 4 adults. It is closely linked to excess weight, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.
In some people the fat causes inflammation and damage, called MASH. Over time, MASH can lead to scarring (fibrosis), cirrhosis and liver failure. Most people have no symptoms until the disease is advanced, which is why research into better treatments matters.

Who may qualify
Most of our fatty liver studies are open to people who:
- Are between 18 and 75 years old
- Have been told they have fatty liver disease, NAFLD/MASLD or NASH/MASH, or have risk factors such as excess weight, type 2 diabetes or high liver enzymes on a blood test
- Do not drink alcohol heavily (fatty liver caused by alcohol is a different condition)
- Do not have another type of liver disease, such as hepatitis B or C
Not sure if you have fatty liver disease? Many people don't know they have it. Start with a short pre-screening call. If you look like a good fit for a clinical trial, you may be invited to an in-person screening visit. Depending on the study, screening can include tests such as blood work or a FibroScan (a quick, painless ultrasound-style scan of the liver). These tests are part of a study's screening process and are not offered as a separate service.

What to expect
- 1
Phone pre-screen
About 15 minutes. A coordinator asks about any liver diagnosis, liver blood tests, alcohol use and other health conditions.
- 2
Screening visit
We review the study and consent form with you. The screening visit may include bloodwork, a FibroScan or other diagnostic screenings needed to confirm eligibility; some studies also use an MRI or a liver biopsy.
- 3
Treatment visits
Spaced a few weeks apart at first, then further apart, with blood work and liver imaging at set points.
- 4
End-of-study check
Final tests show how your liver has changed over the course of the study.
Fatty liver studies often last a year or more, because liver changes take time to measure. You get the exact schedule before you agree to join.
What you can count on
- Liver tests, imaging, exams and study medication related to the study at no cost to you
- You can join without health insurance
- Compensation for time and travel, based on the study's visit schedule
- Oversight by an Institutional Review Board (IRB), an independent committee that protects the rights and safety of research participants

Your study team
Our liver studies are overseen by Sunildat Maheshwari, MD, Principal Investigator. Because fatty liver so often comes with weight, diabetes and cholesterol concerns, his decades in family medicine in Gilbert give him a whole-person view of liver health.
Meet Dr. Sunny →Do I need a liver biopsy?
Some MASH studies require a liver biopsy to confirm the diagnosis and measure results, and many use non-invasive tests like blood work and a FibroScan instead. The study team tells you exactly what each study involves before you decide.
What is the difference between NAFLD, MASLD, NASH and MASH?
They are old and new names for the same conditions. NAFLD is now called MASLD (fat in the liver). NASH is now called MASH (fat plus inflammation and liver damage). The new names reflect the link to weight, blood sugar and cholesterol.
I have no symptoms. Should I still consider a study?
Yes. Most people with fatty liver feel fine, even when liver damage is present. That is one reason studies look at blood tests and imaging rather than symptoms.
Is there a cost for fatty liver studies?
No. Study-related tests, imaging and medication are provided free, and you do not need insurance. Participants are also paid for their time and travel.
Can I keep my diabetes or cholesterol medicine?
Usually, yes. The study doctor reviews all of your medicines at screening and lets you know about any changes before you start.
