The Four Phases of Research — A Quick Map
Clinical research moves through four phases before a treatment reaches the general public:
- Phase I tests safety in a small group — researchers learn how the body handles the drug and what doses are tolerable.
- Phase II expands to hundreds of patients and asks: does it work?
- Phase III compares the new treatment to the current gold standard across thousands of participants — this is what generates FDA approval.
- Phase IV happens after approval, monitoring how the drug performs in the real world over years.
